Borrowing Equipment
Borrowing is presently only available for those who have attended a Podcasting Orientation at Butler library due to the limited quantity of equipment and staffing constraints in the Digital Scholarship Center. For those who are eligible to borrow equipment, the following rules are in effect:
How To Check Out Podcast Equipment from Butler 305
- Enter the Podcast Equipment Checkout Spreadsheet
- Only people who have attended Podcast Orientations and students in Podcast Club will be granted access to this spreadsheet.
- Record the date and time you would like to check out each piece of equipment. (For example, headphones are labeled H1, H2, H3, etc.)
- Do this for every piece of equipment you are given; there are different tabs for each kind of equipment (headphones, microphones, etc)
- Consult the person at the front desk of the Digital Scholarship Center (Butler 302), to check out any equipment you need
- Show your student ID card to the person at the front desk. Student workers are only allowed to release equipment to approved borrowers.
- Make sure the equipment you receive from the student worker matches what you have checked out on the spreadsheet. Each item is labeled with its unique alphanumeric code.
- When you are done using the equipment, return it to the person at the front desk, and record the time you returned it on the “check in” column
“The Rules”
- The person at the front desk will not give you anything unless you display your valid Columbia ID
- The person at the front desk will only be able to issue the specific materials you have checked out on the spreadsheet. Please ensure the materials you want are available and have been reserved on the spreadsheet before you arrive.
- You may only have the equipment for 6 hours at a time.
- Failure to return equipment on time 3 times will result in a 2 week suspension of borrowing privileges.
- If you lose a piece of equipment, you will lose all future privileges for checking out equipment

Using the Recording Space
The soundproofed recording space on the Butler Library third floor mezzanine is available for booking for Columbia Community members who have attended a Podcast Orientation or are members of Podcast Club.
How To Book the Butler Podcast Studio
- Enter the Podcast Studio Booking Spreadsheet
- Only people who have attended Podcast Orientations and students in Podcast Club will be granted access to this spreadsheet.
- Record the date and time book the studio
- The studio can be booked for recording (interviews, narration, etc.) or for sound editing and mixing.
- Consult the person at the front desk of the Digital Scholarship Center (Butler 305), to check out any equipment you need
- Show your Columbia ID card to the person at the front desk. Student workers are only allowed to release the studio Key to approved borrowers.
- When you are done using the equipment, return it to the person at the front desk, and record the time you returned it on the “check in” column

- If another podcaster has booked the studio after you and you run over, you will be interrupted and the person with the booking for the next slot will have the right to the space.
- You may only reserve the studio for four hours at a time.
- Failure to return the key 3 times will result in a 2 week suspension of booking privileges.

- Windows Laptop installed with Adobe Audition and Audacity desktop Clients
